What is a Fuel Pump?

There are vehicles without any fuel pump. In these vehicles, fuel is delivered to the combustion chamber through a gravity operated line. These types of fuel delivery systems are few and far between. A fuel pump powers most fuel delivery systems. Fuel pumps come in two designs—mechanical and electrical.

The mechanical fuel pump runs off the crankshaft via a metal piece that drives up and down by the action of the crankshaft, much like the action of a cylinder piston. The shaft’s action pumps a piston inside the fuel pump that provides the suction from the fuel tank and the pressure into the combustion chamber. These types of fuel pumps are located inside the engine compartment. Fuel pumps powered by electricity are normally housed inside the fuel tank to provide the pressure without the necessity of suction.
